German Studies major Gregory Heller ’04 named Urban Innovator of the Week
Gregory Heller ’04, CEO of American Communities Trust (ACT), was named Urban Innovator of the Week on Feb. 15, by Urban Innovation Exchange (UIX), an initiative to advance urban improvement and highlight those who are on the leading edge of this movement. Begun in 2012 as a three-year project in Detroit and funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, UIX is now showcasing talented people from all over the country who are transforming the cities and neighborhoods in which they live.
As head of ACT, Heller, who has spent more than 10 years in community development in Philadelphia, helps nonprofits build and finance social impact real estate—projects that improve the quality of life, particularly in low-income areas, by providing needed services and offering desirable real estate for new businesses and residents.
In a TEDx talk given last June in Philadelphia, “How To Set up Social Impact Real Estate,” he explained the impetus behind his work: “Our cities and our communities are defined by the interaction of people and places… but who shapes the built environment around us?” he asks. “We walk around our cities and we say, ‘Oh, look, they’re building that new project over there,’ or ‘Why haven’t they built anything here yet?’ Who are they? Why is it ‘they’ and not we? Too often developers in low income neighborhoods have profit rather than the community’s best interest…I believe that [social impact real estate projects] s are critical to the future of our cities, our communities and ultimately our society.”

The German Studies Filmclub presents: Deutschland ’83- A gripping coming-of-age story and spy thriller set in Germany in the ‘80s
Join us this Friday, February 12 at 8:00PM in USDAN 108 for Germany’s newest TV series Deutschland ’83 (English subtitles).
In a divided Germany in 1983, naive 24-year-old East German soldier Martin Rauch is pulled from his benign post as a border guard and given a new assignment: undercover spy for the Stasi foreign service in West Germany. Hiding in plain sight as Moritz Stamm in the West German army, Rauch must gather NATO military secrets. As he veers between father figures, love interests, and East and West Germany, nothing is quite what it seems and everyone he encounters is harboring secrets, both political and personal. The coming-of-age story — created by American journalist and author Anna Winger and her German husband, Jörg Winger — is the first German-language drama to be aired on a major U.S. network.

Scholarships Available for UAS7 Internship Opportunities in Germany – Deadline February 15, 2016
UAS7 (Seven German Universities of Applied Sciences) invites students who are currently enrolled in Canadian and U.S. colleges to apply for the UAS7 Internship Program (IP). The deadline for this program is February 15, 2016. Successful applicants for the Internship Program (IP) are eligible for a UAS7 Travel Scholarship of 1000 EUR to cover or defray transatlantic travel expenses for program participation. Applicants will be notified about program and scholarship acceptance simultaneously. No additional application materials are necessary; the program application is used by the selection committee to evaluate candidates for scholarships as well as program admission.
UAS7 is a strategic alliance of seven leading German Universities of Applied Sciences (UAS) committed to excellence in teaching and research and close cooperation with German businesses and industries in Berlin, Bremen, Cologne, Hamburg, Munich, Münster and Osnabrück.
